As a librarian on the subject of civil engeineering and management I am very interested in the Sokal Affair. Cultural studies with respect to science and technology are debated here at the Twente University within the circle of social scientists. More information about the ideas and vision from physisians and other scolars in the field of science is badly needed.

Fifteen years ago or so I found Lacan's "Ecrits"
in paperback edition, remaindered at 20F, which
I bought, of course: I am an avid collector of
nonsense. Having lived in Australia since 1968,
I was far from suspecting that his arrant
nonsense had spawned a whole industry of snake
oil. Satire is the proper weapon indeed. High
time, but I fear little can be done. The lacanians
are a particularly venomous breed, by which
they take after their master. The jingoistic
reactions of Le Monde and Le Nouvel Observateur
are shameful. Those obnoxious charlatans ought
to be denounced flatly and roundly (ahem), not
excused. Comme Hara-Kiri, mais sans l'humour,
ils sont bêtes et méchants. Mais eux ne le font
pas exprès, ce qui est bien pire.

Thanks for helping to bring attention to the utter nonsense of so much so-called modern "intellectual" nonsense a la Sokal. Someone finally had the courage to realize the Emperor had no clothes! Intellectual integrity finally!... I can just see Voltaire reading Lacan and spitting with contempt!

I am a physics PhD student. Good fun reading
all about Sokal affair. Reading "Transgressing
the Boundaries,..." I couldn't help laughing
loud. I reached the quotations and began crying.
So far I didn't know that there are philosophers
who don't care about laws of nature, nor about
logical thinking. (Do they themselves exist?
Seems to depend on our opinion.)
I had never thought someone would understand(!)
physical theories the way they do.
O.K., I would communicate with you.

I think Sokal's act was odious. In my field, physics,
verbal abuse and intimidation, lack of respect for
others, are rife. Sokal's act smacks of that
same attitude. If you disagree you're an idiot
and must be mocked. I am really sick of hearing
tenured professors squeal like victims. Meanwhile
I spent five years at Caltech hearing "scientific"
explanations for why women can't do math. There
was really no science involved, but when a tenured
science professor wants to make a political point,
he'll always try to make it seem like all of science
and reason is 100% on his side. And of course
anyone who doesn't see things his way - why that's
proof that you're just ignorant. Even if you're
a grad student in physics. That's what I mean about
the general lack of human respect within science.
When can we get past this crap? When can members of
the scientific elite start coming back to their own
humanity, abandon their authoritarian attitudes,
and stop portraying science vs. humanity as some
monumental crisis of a new Dark Age?
I know I'm totally venting here but as a physicist
who is culturally aware, I see a lot to vent over
from within physics, and the Sokal extravaganza
epitomizes it.
GROW UP my fellow scientists GROW UP and learn to
accept disagreement without resorting to name-calling
and childish pranks to control the situation.

So there exists an external world independent of
language and society, does there? Where else
does *that* notion exist than in language
and society? As Heraclitus observed, so great
is the extent of the Logos that we can never
reach its limits....
And yet there is all this verbiage which
seems intended to frustrate communication
rather than to communicate anything.
Another case of "the baby and the bath water"?
How did we get from Edmund Husserl's _The
Crisis of European Sciences_, with its
argument that Galilean sciences were
not yet fully rational, to PostModern
obscurantism?
I once took a course from Norwood Hanson,
author of _Patterns of Discovery_ (about
contemporary with Kuhn's _Structure of
Scientific Revolutions_). Hanson was
a trained physicist, and no enemy of
science, but he also argued that all
observation is dependent on our
preunderstandings. Another source is
Michael Polayni (_Personal Knowledge_).
What does Prof. Sokal think of these
people's ideas?
